TFWs are being approached by agencies / individuals offering to help them access CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit). Workers are asked to put up $250 upfront with a promise to help them access CERB ($500/week). Workers ultimately do not receive the promised funding and are out the initial $250. Employers of affected workers may have been contacted by source country consulates inquiring about this. If you are aware of any instances involving your workers, please contact the OGVG so that we coordinate our efforts with local law enforcement and the OF&VGA to protect our workers.
In the meantime, employers are encouraged to caution their workers about these schemes so they are not taken advantage of. Note that CERB is not currently an active program, with other federal programs having taken its place. Typically these programs only provide coverage in situations where individuals cannot work due to job loss or illness.
Efforts have been taken to notify the provincial and federal governments, as well as the source country consulates.
